Hey everyone, my name is Ben and we are here again for another episode of learning English with some video games. We're still playing Papers, Please, which is a lovely story based game. And if you haven't seen the other episodes, you should definitely check those out. The link is in the description below. so let's jump in we finished on day four so we're going into day number five now and we'll see what's happening we're on easy mode so we've got plenty of money which maybe is less interesting but we'll see so let's continue with the game so we're in november twenty seventh nineteen eighty two the truth of Arstotzka Republican track star wanted for murder. Vince Lestrade's whereabouts unknown. He is likely fled Repubblica. So there's a person, this guy, who is a sports star, or a track star rather, so it means he runs or does some kind of track sport. um is wanted so that means that they want to catch him because he killed somebody he committed he committed a crime uh he murdered somebody he killed someone which is not good And here we say it says Vince Lestrade profile So that's about him like sort of writing about him. So he girlfriend killed and jealous rage question mark And so he's saying that or the newspaper saying that Vince this guy killed his girlfriend while jealous Maybe that's the question mark, right? So when you're jealous, that means that you want something that somebody else has or you feel jealousy based on something somebody else has. So for example, if his girlfriend was seeing somebody else, then he might have been jealous of that other person, that kind of emotion. But anyways, let's walk to work. I'm sure that won't have any importance to our workday. November 27th, 1982. Again, we have all five guards here, and we have our daily bulletin again. So Arstotzka Ministry of Admission official bulletin. Inspector, you are now authorized to detain suspicious individuals. So to detain somebody means to stop them where they are. They cannot keep going further. They must remain or not remain, like you take them into custody, you, again, that's another big word, you arrest them. That's a better word. Arresting them, detain them, something like that. Individuals is just a fancy word for people, right? So suspicious people. Suspicious is when they look strange. They have something wrong with their passport. They have something that's suspicious about them. You go, hmm, that's not right. And it says interrogate discrepancies to enable the detain option. So that's about the game. We have to interrogate and then highlight any problems. And then it will bring up a thing that says detain or whatever. Glory to Artoska, it says. So there's our rules again. Okay. Let's open this and start the day. Next! And we'll have our first person of the day, Bepr Splice. What is the purpose of your trip? Transit through Ostrostocka. A couple of days she's staying. Two days, transit for Alina Oiskovna. Oiskovna. Oya. Oyaskovna. Okay, I can read. Let's see. Enter by is fine. Expiration is in the future, 1984. She was born then, that looks okay. Does the number match? Oh, here it is. No, it does not. So, boop. Number, number. Ah, there we go. So we'll interrogate her. These numbers do not match. Check again, she says. So, okay, I could detain her. Just deny my passport and I'll go away. Okay. You're denied. Go away, lady. Get the right papers. Next. Okay, the next person here, also from the same country. Purpose of the trip, transit, duration of stay, just two days. Great, that's correct. Enter by is fine. Her numbers do match, but that doesn't look like her. Why do you look different? Your picture, it is different. The years have been cruel, she says. So she's saying that the years... so getting older has not been good. She's been getting older and it's... and she's getting... uglier, basically is what she's saying. So I cannot verify your fingerprints. They're not the same. I don't really need to detain you. You're not, I don't know. There you go. Bye, lady. I hope that you have a good day. So I don't really want to detain people. That doesn't seem helpful. Hey, this is the guy that wanted to, where's the news? Yeah Damn Look, I did not kill her. I was set up. You did not believe the Republican lies. Let me through Okay, so he's saying he didn't kill his wife or his girlfriend. I Don't know man. Did you I? Can't I can't take the risk you maybe killed somebody but also like I don't know I I feel bad, because I kind of don't think he did it. I don't think he killed anybody, because this is the sort of place that we're in. There's a lot of misinformation and control, so I'm a bit worried. But yeah. Anyway, so the date looks fine. These match. Transit, I read all that. That looks fine. Correct, 14 days only to visit Ruben Eckerstrom. Let's see, oh yeah, I have to check the regional map. So he's from Republica, which True Glorian is in there. That looks fine. The entry permit, what does that look like? Documents, entry permit, that is correct. Valid seals. All right, you look good, I think. Have a good trip. Take the thingy. There we go. Okay. Cause no trouble, I say. Yeah, that's one of the things with this game is... What the? Incorrect purpose response? All right, whatever. What is the purpose of your trip? It is not my choice. I hate this damn country just passing through as little as possible, a few days. Transit, two days. Enter by is next month. His passport number checks out, he looks the same. Alexander Ovechkin, that also looks good. He's from Shingleton. Let's see, so he's the United Federation. The map, regional map, United Federation. He's from Shingleton. Okay, Alexander, 22. Mail, everything looks okay. But again, something's gonna be wrong, right? He says he doesn't like this country. He doesn't want to be here. I'm sorry, man. Don't take it out on me. I didn't do anything. Yeah, okay. He's fine. Papers, please. Obristan. Visiting relatives. He's saying 90 days, 3 months. That's correct. Visit. That number's right. Sol Friedman. Sure, sure, sure. Enter by next month. Expiration is or his passport has expirited, expired, because it is before this. It was on November 11th, and it is now November 27th. It must be a typographical error, so somebody just wrote it wrong. I'm sorry, my guy, but it's not right. Your passport is expired. Come back with a modern, no, up-to-date passport. What is the purpose of your trip? Visiting friends, how long? Three months, great. Enter by, again, this is in the past, my dude. You had to have come a week ago, or, oh, interview. This document is expired. Nora, I was busy. I don't really have an option other than to give you back your papers and say, sorry, but no. We'll see what the next person has. Hopefully their documents are all in order. Paper splees, purpose of your trip. Today's a beautiful day, my friend. We finally became free from Antigrian tyranny. Did you say how long you're staying? Yeah, can you tell me why you're staying? How do I get him to tell me how long he's staying? Um. Well, oh, I think I have to go in the rule book. Rules, entrance must have a passport, ID card, documents must be printed. Oh, I don't know. I don't really know how to ask him why he's coming, but I guess I just assume that he's escaping. Enter by, looks fine. Exploration is fine. Saint Maramo, I'm pretty sure that's fine, but let's just double check. Regional map, Integria, Saint Maramo, yep. Date of birth is fine, his name is fine. Piotr, Piotr Vostok. Eptikite, immigrate forever, 1882, yeah. Oops, that's not what I wanted to do. I wanted to do this, so I think this is fine. All right, thank you so much. Be kind to my wife, she is just after me. Uh-oh. Why would I need to be kind to her? Oh no. Where's your document, lady? You have to have an entry permit. Where's your entry permit? Please, I beg you. They would not give it to me. I have no choice. I will be killed if I return to Integria. She's Vostok Katia. That's the same name as the guy that went before her. Uh, okay, you can go through. But, yeah. Oh, I got a token. Okay, I got a token for letting you through, I guess, but yeah, I got another warning. All right, boost upgrade available. So I can press the space key to make things easier. It's only five and I'm making, I have, the easy mode is making it so easy, honestly. So I'll buy it. That's fine to me. So yeah, let's go to the next day. I think that we have an interesting day ahead of us and now I can press space bar to turn on the interrogate mode. That's nice and easy. alright so Vince Lestrade apprehended in Grestin that was us we did that so the trap champ the track champ looks quite guilty now I do feel bad about that because I don't think he did it I think it's the news lying so he looks guilty which means that he looks like he did it and when you look so guilty is when you did something right you were guilty of in this case committing a crime And now there's also a note down here, jobs few becoming fewer. There are not very many jobs and there are less and less every single day. And it says that immigrants are taking jobs from locals. So people that are coming into the country from other countries are taking more jobs. Anyways, November 28th, 1982. The Ministry of Labor has instituted a special program to control immigrant labor. Travelers entering for work require a valid work pass. So, the ministry, which is the people that control the border, right? have created, instituted, and planned a new program to control the taking of jobs. People that are coming in for work have to have a permit to do so. They have to have a piece of paper that says, yes, you can work. Anyways, let's get right into it. That's my space bar now. Lovely. Papers, please, sir. Okay, here's the work pass right away. Oh god, there's more documents now. Staying a few weeks for work. So one month, that's a few weeks. Enter by is correct. This number is correct. Tomas Carpentour, Tomas Carpentour, general labor until January, which is about a month. Okie dokie. Let's just double check that his location. So he's from Republica, which is in Lestradni. That's fine. Let's see. If I also go to documents and work pass, I can double check what that stamp looks like. Okay. That's that one. Hmm. Okay. This is fine. Let's see. Keep this password with you all times. That looks fine. That looks fine. I think we're okay, Thomas. I don't see anything wrong with your papers. All three of them now. Geez, there's a lot of papers. Cause no trouble, I say to Thomas. And it looks like he's okay. Phew. Papers, please. Okay, another worker. Come to work. From Joachim Carlstrom. She's working. Food service until the sixth month. So that's about six months. That's correct. That number is right. It expires in two years. A woman that looks like her. She was born in 61. The food service. She gave me this, which doesn't really look like food service. But you know. Let's see. So I think that is all good. Enterprise is good. Karlstrom, Joachim. Okay, I can't find anything wrong. Obrestan, is that correct? Oh, M-G-L-M-O-L. Yeah, that's right. Um, Obrestan is up here. Um, Mergerus, that's right. Okay, I think you're fine, Joaquim. Thank you for the little card, I guess. Please help me, she says. Uh... A man named Dari Ludum promised me and my sister good work in Arstotzka. I do not trust him. I am afraid he will take my passport and force me to work at a brothel. He is in line today. Okay, so she's saying that this guy, Dari Ludum, is going to force her to work. So a brothel is a place where people can buy sex, basically. And so she's saying that he will force her to work in a brothel against her will by taking away her passport. That is not good. We might have to help her. So he's gonna stay for eight weeks to work, two months, that's correct. Enter buys, correct. Work, those numbers match. Patrovskiy Dragunov, okay, that looks fine. Dragunov Manufacturing, work until two months, okay. Expires in the future. Singleton from United Federation, I think that's fine as well. Regional map. United Federation, Shingleton, yep. Let's see, I think everything is good as well here. I don't really see any issues. There's your pass. Cause no trouble, but this is getting complicated trying to keep track of all these things. Papers, please. Okay, he needs a passport, right? Basic rules. Must have a passport. Yeah, so entrance must have a passport. He does not have a passport. Where's passport? I have it here. Okay. Why don't you give it to me? All right, Parsons Shane. Parsons Shane, date of birth, 9-16-1942. He's 179 centimeters, that's correct. Weighs 83 kilograms, he looks right. Identity card, he's from... Documents, ID card is from Guinness Thora, great, and this passport is from Arstotzka, it's Paradizna, Paradizna, Paradizna, okay. All right, Shane, you're looking okay. I see no issues with your documentation, sir. Glory to Arstotzka, I say. All right, next person, let's see what's going on. Oh, this guy again. Hello, old friend. Oh, he's got a passport. It looks real. This time everything's set. Georgie, where, no, it's not everything's set. What are you doing here? All documents must be current citizens foreigners mustn't have an entry permit. Where is your entry permit? You're missing an entry permit my guy. Oh, man, you funny guy. He says What here do you want this? You don't want this. All right How about I just deny you? Thank you. Oh Shoot Did I approve him? I did That was not on purpose. I meant to deny him. Oh well, whatever. Uh, you, you do, you do, you do out there. You do you out there, Georgie. Um, that was my bad, though. Um, okay, another citizen, East Grestin, 165, that looks right, 55 kilograms, date of birth looks fine. Uh, Carol, Burnton District, I don't know if you're gonna check that, that's like never wrong, I don't think. Um, Carol, you look fine, go on ahead. I have this lovely little coin now. Glory to Rostock. All right, next person. I wonder if we're gonna see Dari Ludum. I bet, yeah, this is him. Yeah, and he's giving me this as well. I don't really want this, my guy. Can I check this? Discrepancy detected. Are you Dari Ludum? Of course, this is my passport. Alternate, detain him. Yeah, just gonna force somebody to give me my papers back. No, go out, get out of there. You're gonna try to force someone else to work in a brothel, which is not okay. All right, final person. Hey, do you want one of these? Okay, no, she doesn't. Coming to visit, only two weeks, 14 days. Your number is wrong, though. Sorry, Quaz Waloska. Two different numbers here. I know nothing about this. Yeah, yeah. Go get a right passport. But that looks like it's the end of the day. Oh no, one more person. At least. Because usually when this is fully blocked like that, it's the end of the day. Transiting to somewhere else, 14 days. That is not right. So her name is Cara. Transit, expiries in the future. That looks like her from Vedor, Kolechia. Let's see, regional map, Kolechia. Vedor, that looks good. Entry permit. Enter by, everything looks fine. Hmm, something feels wrong. Whatever. Good luck out there, Kada. I hope you have a good rest of your day. Somebody else, let's get them in here. Papers, please. What is the purpose of your trip? Visiting friends, he says. Okay, visit. 60 days, that's two months, correct. Enter buys, right. His number is right. Slenced. Oh, jeez, what's happening? Oh, okay. Another terrorist attack, which has ended the episode. The day was cut short by a terrorist attack. It was the end of the day, but you know, that's fine. I was going a little slow. And that's everything for this day. That is a little crazy. Um, but I hope that you enjoyed this episode of Papers, Please Learning English with Video Games. Let me know, let me know down in the comments below what word you learned or thing you learned maybe, or maybe something that you also just noticed about the way that I speak.
